A civil lawsuit is the means by which an individual (victim) can seek monetary damages from another (offender). A 'preponderance of the evidence' is the standard of proof.

A civil lawsuit is a case brought for financial compensation in a civil court, as opposed to a criminal case which is brought in a criminal court. The defendant in a criminal case is accused by the state of breaking the law, the defendant in a civil case is being sued by another citizen or business entity.
