What are 1-2 inch-long bees with long stingers?

This could be any number of species of bee, though very few species of bees have stingers. Female Carpenter Bees match this description, though.

These are most likely Wasps or Hornets that you are seeing. Stay as far away from them as possible, their stings are worse than a regular bee's and multiple stings can kill. If you have a nest where you live then call and exterminator, don't try to remove it yourself.

Chances are you are looking at a wasp or hornet rather than a bee. Bee stingers tend to be very small. Hornets and wasps can have longer, pronounced abdomen ends that give the appearance of looking like stingers. They also tend to have the same colors as bees, ergo the confusion.
