Here in Amarillo we've got yellow jackets, paper wasps and mud daubers. I haven't really seen any with a really big stinger except for a big one once that was black and really scary looking. I don't think I've ever had one sting me ever.

The Pelecinid wasp lives in Eastern and Central North America. The female is about 2-1/2 - 3 inches long. They are primarily seen in August and September and have been spotted in Texas quite frequently. This particular wasp is black with about a 5 inch stinger and large wings.

The stinger of this wasp is not a straight one. I've seen them and they have kind of a curl to them. Really skinny wasp too!  add a comment

If it was about 1. 5 inches long with rust colored coloring it could have been a Cicada Killer wasp. They are considered pretty beneficial. The male does not sting at all and if the female does it is probably because it was stepped on accidentally while outside.
