A bilirubin test determines the level of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is removed from the blood by the liver; the presence of elevated levels of bilirubin in the blood indicates there is a problem in the liver, which could be a blockage, cirrhosis, acute hepatitis, liver disease or a genetic predisposition.
