I always drink a glass of water before heading to the lab for a blood draw. The better hydrated your body is, the easier it is to take blood. Drink extra water the day before too if you can, it really does make a difference.

The reason you may have been told to drink water before your blood test is because proper hydration allows the phlebotomist to have an easier time taking your blood. The veins are more visible and the blood flows better. Drink a cup/hour a few hours before the test.

You are probably told to drink water so you don't get dehydrated. When you are dehydrated, your vessels constrict and it's harder to draw blood.

if it's for glucose testing there are certain types that you must not take, but having a complete blood count drinking water will not distract the result, there is no such thing that you must drink water before taking your blood test

Yes, you can drink as much water as you can. Because water will not bring any major ions into your blood. Drink as much as you want. Again, nothing will happen.
