A black bear can reach a speed of 35 miles an hour when running for a short distance. This is equivalent to the speed of a horse or deer, and it's certainly much faster than a human can run. There is a myth that bears cannot run downhill, but this is false because bears can outrun humans in any direction.

The fastest bear is the Black Bear, followed by the Grizzly, then the Brown and the Polar Bear. In short, the larger the bear the slower it is. even the slowest bear can still move it out at about 30 mph. The Brown Bear can run approximately 40 mph.

I have outrun a black bear. So it is possible. I outran it over 100+ yards with a verified eyewitness. However, I don't recommend that any EVER try this for kicks. For you may not ever live to tell your tale. Wild animals are extremely dangerous. Beware of them.
