It is very difficult to stop a kleptomaniac. Kleptomania is a disease and one who suffers from this disease must WANT to get help before they will get any better or begin recovery. Usually, kleptomaniacs will have an epiphany and stop stealing once they get caught and suffer from the consequences.

Call them out on their stealing. Don't show sympathy for their need to steal, instead demand that they repay you for stolen items. Use bold truth.

"Stopping" a kleptomaniac is a difficult task. In order to address this, you want to view this is an anxiety disorder, with the end result leading to a discharge of anxiety. You want to help the person identify triggers to this behavior and finding healthy ways to discharge the anxiety without resulting in theft.
