Since 9/11 every country has required every one that enters its borders to have proper indentificaton. Birth papers, social security, or drivers licence is no longer sufficient. Everyone regardless of the age has to have an official passport regardless how they enter the county.

Children and Adults ALWAYS need a Passport for international travel unless a prior agreement exists between countries. Some countries allow children on a parent's passport, but they always require something.

Both children and adults need passports to travel to Canada by land or air, due to recent security changes. Some adults can obtain passport cards, which are somewhat cheaper than book passports, and are easier to carry. These cards can only be used in North American destinations, however, so they may be less efficient for some.

Yes children do need a passport to travel to Canada by any means, land, air or water. In certain states this can be waved if you get one of those special driver's licenses.

Yes, children need passports to travel by land to Canada. However, there is now a passport card available for travel to Mexico or Canada.

Not to get into Canada, but they will need one to get back out into the United States. In other words, yes.
