It is a frankly sweet wine without any pretension of complexity. It is the closest wine to sweet sodas. If that is what you like, just ignore your friends.

White Zinfandel is felt to be too much like a soda drink rather than a wine because of its frankly sweet taste and simple palate. Your friends are not very helpful and if they want you to try more interesting wines they are missing the opportunity to expose you to them. Wine tasting is an acquired taste.
