Why is the elephant a political symbol?

Cartoonist Thomas Nast was the first to draw the elephant as the symbol of the Republicans. Nast supported the Republican Party, and used the elephant to symbolize strength and intelligence.

The elephant is a political symbol primarily because of its odd physique. With its trunk, tusk, large ears and overall bulk, an elephant resembles very few other animals. As such it serves as a handy symbol which retains its characteristic features regardless of rendering style in campaign materials or cartoons.
