Why Don't we Eat Chicken for Breakfast?

When you consider the different types of meat that are included in common breakfast meals, there is one glaring omission: chicken. Most restaurants that serve breakfast offer sausage, bacon, corned beef hash and even steak. Oddly, chicken is not offered, even though breakfast is usually a light meal and chicken is one of the lightest of the common types of meats.

The chart below shows some examples of common breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes, based on the type of meat they're centered around. Chicken for breakfast is oddly empty!

There should be meat at every meal. It is incredibly tasty, the best source of protein, and shows animals who is boss on this planet!  add a comment

Show the animals who are boss on this planet?! You cannot be serious. I hope you get eaten by a rapid goat on your way home from work.  add a comment

A rapid goat? If I see one of them, I'll let you know. Also, clearly the poster isn't serious, yet you sound like you are - and so very angry. Must be a lack of meat at your meals. And rapid goats always chasing you...rapidly. Relax!  add a comment

Aren't eggs chicken? Perhaps because eggs are a staple food at breakfast, it seemed somewhat wrong to eat the chicken with them?

We most certainly eat chicken for breakfast in the south. Haven't you heard of chicken and waffles, or honey-butter chicken biscuits? Mmmm...

in my country(the Netherlands) most people eat bread for breakfast, usually with slices of ham or chicken, or with sweet stuff on it. boiled and fried eggs are also very common. So to me, it sounds weird to have steak or sausage for breakfast. its something i would eat for dinner

Vegetables also aren't common at breakfast. I find that weird too. That's also a light and healthy ingredient, but it's really not all that common in Western breakfast.

That's true... I am often appalled at the options at "standard" breakfast places... most of the options are laden with fat and carbs, all to be smothered in sugary syrup and sometimes topped with whipped cream!  add a comment

You can get all sorts of vegetables in omelets. Peppers, tomatoes (fruit, technically, if you want to be that guy), onions... and how about potatoes? Hash browns, anyone? Vegetables are not uncommon for breakfast at all!  add a comment

What about a Western omelette? It's filled mostly with vegetables. Probably a common part of a Western breakfast too.  add a comment

I presume the primary reason that chicken is not commonly eaten for breakfast is just for arbitrary traditional reasons. Chicken dishes just didn't make it into the breakfast canon.

Actually, there's a chain restaurant in Mexico called VIP which served a delicious chicken cutlet for breakfast. Ate it there every other day for a week while I was in Cancun. They had better food than the 5-star restaurant in my hotel.

Chicken biscuits, chicken sausage, eggs, etc. Also, vegetables are served at breakfast often. Potatoes, onions, various greens in omelet and fish preparations...

I love how the cow and the pig in the cartoons above are smiling, but the chicken looks a little distraught - the chicken seems so sad that it is left off the breakfast menu!

What about chicken sausage? That is sometimes offered for breakfast.

Reply by quadratic (73):
Chicken sausage is really just a healthy-alternative to other sausages... it is spiced and prepared to taste just like pork or beef sausage, so I don't think it serves as a strong counterexample.  add a comment

What about fish and lamb... those are not commonly eaten for breakfast either.

Reply by penrose (235):
I think you have a good point about fish (just sounds really gross for breakfast), but lamb just isnt that common in general, so I don't think it counts here.  add a comment

I know some body builders that eat boiled chicken breast for breakfast because they focus on protein, but that's certainly not a common breakfast meal. Definitely strange when you consider that steak (as in steak and eggs) is a common breakfast dish!

What about fish? That is not common for breakfast in the US either but popular elsewhere in the world. It is even healthier than chicken.

McDonald's serves a breakfast chicken biscuit as does Chic-Fil-A...

Reply by Sikkim (65):
That must be a regional thing (maybe in the south?), because where I live, there is no chicken on the menu at McDonalds, or any of the other fast-food joints for that matter.  add a comment

No need to eat chicken when the best breakfast food is made available by the same chicken - their eggs.

There is chicken and turkey in omelets or scrambles sometimes, but it is true those are afterthoughts. Those aren't really common breakfast ingredients.

And how come there is turkey bacon but not chicken bacon? Does turkey work better as bacon for some reason over chicken? Why would that possibly be?
