The US and Japan are countries with people who are not afraid to work, and both are countries with liberal economic policies. Superior work ethic combined with superior economic viability allows for those countries to be superior in GDP.
The United States has about 300 million people and a high-per capita income, making it the largest economy per person and one of the largest in the word. Japan has about 100 million people and as high per-capita income as the US.
