During Henry VIII's reign, Clement the VII was the Pope in Rome. However, since England was geographically distant from Rome, Clement elected a papal legate in England, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, giving him the authority of the Church and superiority over the Archbishop of Canterbury. In this way the pope had direct influence in England.
