Who paid to establish Jamestown?

Why was the early settlement of Jamestown a near disaster? How did the growing of tobacco affect the Jamestown colony?

The Virginia Company funded Jamestown Colony. They were attacked by Indians, suffered disease, famine, cold winters, droughts. Of 500 original colonists 60 survived this period. Tobacco saved the colony by giving the settlers a cash crop to set up supply lines through trade.

The Virginia Company of London sent the expedition to Jamestown. As they were not ready for life in Jamestown, many of the original settlers dies of infection, fevers and dysentery. Starvation was also a factor.
