The earlier you buy is the cheaper it will be in the current economy. Gone are the fare wars. Buy a year in advance if possible.

You should buy tickets usually within six months or more in advance. The longer you wait to purchase the tickets, the more likely you will have to pay a premium for the tickets.

At least a month in advance, I would say, but no more than 2 months for non-international flights. I would say 3 months in advance minimum for international flights, though. You might also track the prices for awhile to get an idea how much they fluctuate, and check different airlines. Use Expedia to start with.

If you're planning a trip around Thanksgiving or Christmas it's best to do it significantly before because flights fill up quickly. For others book closer to the date you leave.
