A lump can be caused by a a calcium build up or, more likely, minor scar tissue. Cutting the roof of your mouth even slightly can cause a ridge to form; if a tiny chunk of tissue is missing, your mouth with grow more tissue to replace it.

Has there been a recent injury? Any type of swelling and discomfort to the roof of the mouth would most certainly becaused by some sort of injury to the area. If you have a open sore in your mouth, bacteria in the mouth and on the tongue can result in an infection that may cause this lump

This could be caused by an infection (if there is an infection in your mouth, it may fill with fluid- blood or pus), or by a sore (if you have scratched the area or otherwise bothered it to the point of forming a sore in your mouth), or it could be a growth- which you should have checked.

Most likely, such a bump would be either a blister or cyst, or some sort of growth. The growth could be benign or might be malignant, so a dentist or oral surgeon should be consulted if the lump remains for two weeks or more.
