The Communist Revolution took Russia out of World War 1 as they found their own internal civil war. After Lenin won the civil war, he made a truce with Germany to avoid invasion of his weakened nation, preventing Germany from having to fight on two fronts and likely lose.

World War 1 started in 1914. The Bolshevik (Communist) revolution broke out in 1917. This pulled Russia out of World War I to focus on an internal civil war. Russia had previously been fighting Germany. Because Russia pulled out and had to make quick truce to avoid being conquered, Germany could fight even longer.
