If you purchased it new, it should come mostly pre-sanded. Use fine grit sand paper to remove and burrs or slivers that remain.

Make sure you use a fine grade sandpaper so as not to nick the new wood, and after you are down with the sanding, use a 0000-grade steel wool to smooth it down even more.

You'll want to use a 220 grit sandpaper and sand along the length of the trim. This will prevent scratching before paint or stain is applied.
