I would advise you to make sure the windows are boarded up and that all outside furniture and stuff is securely fastened or put away.

Make sure you know the safe routes, expecially if you live near water. Make sure your flashlights work, have extra food on hand, cover all windows and doors with shutters and STAY INSIDE!

Make sure you have a good emergency kit handy. This kit should include, at minimum, a first aid kit, lots of potable water, and a flashlight.

If at all possible you should evacuate to a safe shelter. If you won't or can't, make sure you have plenty of drinking water and food that will stay alright at room temperature. You should have your medicines and a battery radio and flashlights. Some people use plywood to board up their windows.

You should try to strengthen the house to reduce damage from high winds. Reinforcing the roof rafters, taping the windows and move light objects in the yard inside to keep them from being blown away. Also have a supply of non perishable food, fresh water, candles, radio with batteries and a good supply of gasoline for your vehicle.

Board up your windows, have plenty of canned food and water on hand (enough food in general to last a few days) and a flashlight.

Use the weather channel and storm warning information to find out when a hurricane might hit. It's a good idea to take your valuables and get out of your house if a serious one is about to hit. Many times tragedies happen because people simply cannot get out of the area before a hurricane hits.
