It depends on the type of DVD player and the type of television. If the p;ayer is standard definition, it is connected by means of RCA cables. If the DVD player and the TV are HD, the options you want to consider are: RCA (low defintion) or HDMI (high definition).

Depending on the kind of DVD player you have and tv. In order of quality Co-axiel Single black cable that carries sound. Composite Three cables bundled together, RED, Yellow, White S Cable Single cable that carries video, needs a separate sound cable Component Five cables bundled together, best signal with this one.

Composite RCA cables are the most commonly available TV-to-DVD connection. You can also use S-Video, component or HDMI if both the DVD and TV supports it.

DVDs can function with simple audio and video cables. However, to get a better resolution, it is suggested to use component cables, or for blu-ray DVD, a single HDMI cable.

Typically a new DVD player comes with the cables that you need to be able to hook it up. I'm not sure of what the cable is called but it's one cable with three color coded prongs on either end.
