Question by  Olivia (21)

What is the purpose of bridging speakers?

I am trying to understand the instructions for installing my new surround sound system and it says to bridge the speakers and amp.

Bridging takes the positive lead from one channel and negative lead from the other channel. If your amp isnt bridgeable, you can fry it. In surround sound, 5. 1 or 7. 1, there should be 5 or 7 speaker wire sets and a sub-woofer port. Contact an expert.

Bridging speakers are commonly used to amplify sound, we can connect the bridging speakers wires to the amplifier and try to install the supporting software it will be easy to perform.

Bridging is reserved for using two or more channels hooked up to one speaker to provide more power to that speaker. It's odd that a factory manual is asking you to bridge; but the short answer is you'll get more power to the bridged speakers.

Bridging speakers are generally used to amplify sound. Bridging takes multiple audio channels and combines them into a single higher quality channel. This is often used to convert surround sound systems into a two-speaker system with higher quality. It gives more power thus allowing the speakers to operate at higher volume.

Bridging speakers will give them more power. It's usually done with car audio subwoofers. When bridged you lose Left and Right channels which would defeat the purpose of surround sound.

Some amplifiers can be configured in a bridge mode to deliver more power to the speakers. This works by having two independent amplifier channels drive a single speaker.

To be blunt, bridging speakers essentially gives them more power, thus allowing them to operate at a higher volume, which is why the process is commonly done with car audio and subwoofers.

Bridging refers to only wiring one speaker (or subwoofer) to two channels. This is to provide more power to this speaker, which will increase the sound output and intensity. More than likely it is a subwoofer you are bridging, because they generally require more power than mid range speakers and tweeters.
