What is the meaning of the word retroactively?

Someone used it the other day in an insurance meeting and I don't know what it means.

Retroactive means to apply a decision or policy to a date before the current date. For example, you might meet to make a decision about a new development and decide that the decision would apply "retroactively" and apply it to when the original event happened.

Retroactively means to make something effective in the past. For example, an insurance company will sometimes make coverage effective back to a date in the past so that you can file a claim from an earlier period. The company could also retroactively deny coverage (if fraud is found for example) and deny claims that had been paid in the past.
