A Christmas tree, usually some version of an evergreen, represents the presence of life in the world during the season of death to help cheer up seasonally depressed people. It is also a symbol of Christ's cross and the sacrifice he made for humanity about thirty years after his birth.

It has religious ties to Christ and his resurection after he was crucified. As Christmas is a celebration of Christ's birth, the pine tree is green all winter long, and when the other trees loose there leaves in the fall and appear to "die", the pine tree stays green and brings life back to the forest. Its a symbol.
