Years ago, godparents were to take over in the event the parents died. A godparent supports the child's religious upbringing as well. Today it is more an honorary title.

A "godparent" is basically someone who sponsors a child at a baptism or christening. The role that this person vows to play is a role model to the child.

Godparents are selected by the parents and promise to help raise the child within the teachings of the church. They may or may not be related by blood to the child. Godparents are also sometimes named guardians of the child should something happen to the parents, but this is not a requirement.
