What is the history of barrel racing?

Not too much is known about barrel racing. It did start in the 1940's and it was a way for women to be apart of the rodeo. It first showed up in Texas rodeos. While men were competing, the women barrel raced as part of their rodeo. The 1st official women's organization was the Women's Professional Rodeo Association in 1948.

Barrel racing was originally developed just for women in the 1940's. The other events were deamed too dangerous for women. Speed and agility of the horse is very important to speed. Dirt conditions make a huge impact.
