The Global Assessment of Functioning is a numeric scale (0 through 100) that doctors use to rate psychological functioning of patients. The top of the scale (91-100) represents a great ability to deal with day-to-day problems. The lower end of the scale represents minimal or absent functioning, and behavioral impairment of communication, judgement, and functioning.

It is usually used as a tool to judge your level of disability. It helps the doctor factor in your abilities to perform tasks on your own, your ability (or lack) of walking, and some mental functioning as well. It helps the doctor follow yor progress or regressions objectively.
