Smoking, respiratory problems, dry air, and shouting or screaming can cause the voice to go. Respiratory problems and even allergies can make you lose your voice. You should schedule an appointment with your doctor, who will be able to perform tests to determine the cause of your problem, and prescribe medication.

Voice loss (laryngitis), should be investigated by a physician if it lasts longer than two weeks. Irritation of vocal chords may be caused by smoking, throat clearing, allergies, yelling, excessive cold, or even cancer of the larynx. When you talk over your laryngitis you further irritate your vocal chords and exacerbate the condition. It's like scratching an already irritated wound.

It can happen from stress, using your voice to much, laryngitis, and although it is very unusual it could possibly be a tumor in the chest or lungs.

Overuse: yelling at sporting events or concerts, doing a lot of singing, etc can cause you to lose your voice if you do not know how to project properly. Also, illnesses like laryngitis, strep throat, and the flu can be possible causes.
