I think most birthstones are designated by month. However, some sources say it is also designated by zodiac signs with more stones to choose from. As for Libra, the birthstone is OPAL which is actually an October birth month stone. Other Libra stones suggest chrysolite (peridot)and lapis lazuli. Maybe you can do a variation of these stones for your necklace.

Libra falls into two months: September and October. If your friends birthday is in September than Sapphire. If October choose something Opal in color.

Being a Libra actually had four birthstones because it is not only one month. The four stones are sapphire, opal, lapis luzuli, agate, and chrysolite.

What your friends birthstone is depends on the month. The months are the ones that have birthstones. If your friend was born in September, then the birthstone is a Sapphire. If your friend was born in October, then the birthstone is Opal. Libras go from September 23rd through October 22nd.
