There are different types of finishes, for example oil based and gel stains; each has its own strengths and weaknesses. You'll need to consider where your piece is going to be after you've finished with it. Will it be in your child's room? an extra bedroom? Whichever you choose, you should buy the expensive stain brush. You'll see the difference.

Take all the drawers out and remove the old hardware (handles). Sand and buff the entire piece. Use a heavy grit sandpaper to start and then a fine grit to finish. Varnish or paint the wood as desired. Buy new hardware and install. This will give you a great piece for minimal cost.

Sand the old finisih off, being careful not to go too deep into the wood. Apply a sanding sealer, then sand again. Next add the new finish and apply sealer.
