Having been through several hurricanes, I can tell you that the best preparation is to stay informed. Be sure that you have a battery-powered radio or television so that you can hear the latest forecasts and news. Most importantly, if told to evacuate, do so. Nothing that you would leave behind is worth dying over.

Be sure to get food that can be kept without refridegeration or need to be cooked with electricity. If you are on the waterway and it is going to be high catagory, board up windows. Prepared for possible evacuation.
