What is involved in setting the timing on a GM ignition 2.8 engine?

The timing is off on my GM.

Disconnect the ignition advance.With the distributor loosen hold down, set idle, check timing marks on crank, if marking is not lined up,turn distributor to line up then tighten down.

If the car has a distributor you simply turn this while uses a timing gun to line up the timing marks on the crank.

Well on a car with a distributor you connect your timing light, disconnect the ignition advance, loosen the distributor hold down, set the idle, check you timing mark on the crank, turn the distributor to get the mark in the correct position, tighten the hold down, and remove the light.
