"Culpa" is a Latin word for "fault," as in guilt. Ex-culpa-tory evidence shows that a defendant in a criminal is not guilty. It is usually clears the defendant of charges.

Exculpatory evidence is proof offered on behalf of a defendant facing criminal charges. An apparent open and shut case can be overturned by a last minute witness who comes forward offering an eyewitness account implicating a person other than the defendant. This would be exculpatory evidence.
