Check fraud can be anything from intentionally writing bad checks, counterfeiting, forgery, writing checks on closed accounts, reordering checks purposely on closed accounts and a whole myriad of other things I can't recall at the moment.

A check, whether paper or electronic represents an implied trust that an equivalent amount of cash exists in a legitimate bank account. Whenever that trust is violated, this is called check fraud. Check fraud occurs because criminals alter the check including changing the payee and or the amount.
