The actual top speed of the Nimitz-class carrier is kept somewhat secret. Officially, it is usually stated as 35 knots plus. A knot (short of Nautical Mile) is equal to 1.13 miles per hour.

An aircraft carrier's speed depends on a variety of factors - wind, current, weight, etc. To this date, most aircraft carriers attain roughly the same top speed, which is about 30 miles per hour. While that does not seem very fast, that is quite a haul for a boat that size!

While the actual top speeds of today's aircraft carriers are classified military information, best estimates generally are in the 35-40 mph range. Factors such as wind, weight, and the sea current all are factors in determining top velocity.

This would depend on which of our gorgeous girls you are talking about. I choose the Enterprise as the benchmark based on her quality and yrs of service- 33.6 knots.

Their top speed is as fast as the driver dares to push it. Efforts are ongoing to push the speed of the aircraft carriers to greater heights to increase our country's readiness in mission critical times. The speed and accuracy of the aircraft carrier benefits and assists our warfighters in completing their missions.
