Well typically this refers to the space inside the intake system of an engine. It is the open area between the opening of the intake and the individual runners.

It is a pressurized housing chamber that usually hold a gas or a liquid at a positive pressure compared to its surroundings. It is most commonly used to equalize pressure because of differences of supply and demand or it can act as a sound silencer.
