A hyena is a meat eating mammal that spends most of its waking hours at night. It has a doglike appearance but carries more characteristics of the feline (cat) family. They stand two and a half feet high at the shoulder and are crafty hunters. They have strong teeth and jaws. Their cry mimics that of laughter.

A hyena is an animal very similar to the wolf family. They are best known for their "laughs," which are really just the sounds they make instead of traditional barking noises, but it sounds very similar to laughter.

The spotted hyena is also known as the laughing hyena. It lives in Africa south of the Sahara. They live in matriarchal communities that can have up to 80 members. They are often mislabeled as scavengers, but mostly hunt. They are also highly intelligent, and some studies suggest this intelligence is on par with some primates.
