A high gain antenna is one that exhibits directional characteristics. That means it receives signals well in the direction in which it is pointed, and less well in all other directions. That can be used to home in one one specific signal, or to minimize interference from an unwanted signal.

Gain is a parameter which measures the degree of directivity of the antenna's radiation pattern. A high gain antenna emits radiation in a particular direction while a low gain antenna emits radiation about equally in all directions. This is a simple explanation limited by the space I have here.

A high gain antenna is an antenna with radio wave beam. These are antennas are used by Direct TV and dish and Comcast. They allow you to receive more channels than you normally would with regular television. They allow you to also get HD channels. These are useful but they are switching from antennas to cable TV without the antenna.

An antenna that can greatly amplify the received signal. It is useful for places away from big cities, where the signal gets weak.

A high gain antenna is an antenna that has a very narrow radiowave beam width. Often used in flat, open spaces, the high gain antenna allows more precise targeting of a radio signal. The most common use for high gain antenna's are for deep space probes. High gain antennas are also sometimes referred to as "directional antennas."
