There are many versions of my favorite epitaph verse, which is said to have originated from a Puritan cemetery in New England. It goes: Stranger, as you're passing by, as you are now, so once was I. As I am now, so you shall be. Prepare yourself to follow me.

Epitaphs can be serious or humorous. They can be as simple as, "I was here and now I'm gone." Or a longer and somewhat common epitaph on older tombstones says, "Remember friend as you walk by, as you are now so once was I. As I am now you will surely be. Prepare thyself to follow me."
