A brad nailer is a power nail gun that shoots brads. Brads are small finishing nails that have very small heads, or sometime no heads.

A brad nailer is a manual or pneumatic nail gun that uses nails of a very small diameter and length, or brads, for fastening very light-weight or relatively delicate objects. This is used where a standard nail gun would be overpowered and damage the object, and a staple-gun would be insufficient.

A brad nailer is a type of pneumatic or electric powered nailer. It is designed to be used with small brad nails as opposed to the larger nails. It uses air or electricity to drive the nails in consistently.

A "brad nailer" is a compressed-air or electric-powered automatic nail-gun which drives finish-nails into light-materials like moulding or thin-paneling. You do not "need" a brad-nailer to install molding; a good hammer & experience/practice works; but an inexpensive brad-nailer or a good stapler which accepts brad-nails makes it a lot easier.
