In some states a parent can file what is known as a CHINS (Child in Need of Services). This is where you and your child go before a judge and you explain what problems you are having and the judge decides what action should be taken to correct the child's behavior.

If that happens the child can be sent to juvenile detention depending on what state you are in. In a lot of states you may be encouraged to file a CHINS (Child In Need of Services) and have a judge decide what the best course of action may be. This could be anything from counseling to juvenile probation.

It could possibly damage the trust relationship between parent and teen. Inappropriate behavior is not acceptable, but taking a teen to court should not be a hasty decision.

Parents can ask the juvenile court to step in when their children are running out of control. Often times mediation or counseling will be offered to help both parent and child to get along. In more serious cases it could be determined that the child needs more care than parents can provide and they will be placed in foster care.
