Making it more difficult to accomplish a goal or deal with a problem. This idiom originates from the idea of applying salt to a wound, which makes it more difficult to cope with the pain. The 'game' in this and other similar phrases represents life and it's struggles.

To "throw salt in the game" is to purposely try to foul up someone's plans or schemes. It's most often used in situations where a guy is doing what he can to cause another guy to fail in his attempts to hit on a woman. A person who throws salt in your game might also be called a "cock blocker. "
