What difference does it make if you're riding with a backwards bit?

It looks the same to me.

A bit is designed to change its shape and put pressure on the horse's mouth when the rider uses the reins. If the bit is in backwards, it will not change shape correctly, and it will not put pressure on the right parts of the horse's mouth. This may confuse the horse or cause pain.

It depends on the type of bit. All bits are made to be worn a specific way in the horse's mouth. A backwards bit may give you less control. It may also be painful to the horse. It's advisable to use your equipment as it was designed to be used.

Depending upon the horse the mouth maybe more receptive to the pressure that the bit creates. Some horse love the reverse feel others hate it. Try all different types to see which one your horse likes.

If you are using a jointed bit (ie: snaffle,) you are pinching the mouth significantly causing pain. If you are using a solid mouthed bit, you are getting improper bit action, and can also cause significant pain. Bits are tools- use them with care and knowledge.

Bits are designed to lay a specific way in the horses mouth, though to the novice eye, a typical bit may first look like it is the same upside down or rightside up. It is important to know how your horse's bit is supposed to look when help rightside up.
