The senses of smell and taste are closely related, and any illness that included a stuffy nose or mucus in the sinuses could affect taste. Many medications that have a "dry mouth" side effect can also affect the sense of taste, or it may be a sign of neurological illness.

There are several reasons you wouldn't have a sense of taste in your mouth. The one which comes to mind most frequently is due to chemotherapy, in cancer patients.

This could be caused by a taste disorder. Though taste disorders are uncommon, they do definitely exist. The condition that takes away ALL sense of taste (not just appreciation for certain tastes like sour, sweet, or bitter) is called ageusia. Most taste disorders do not originate at birth and arise after injuries or injuries.

The most common cause of loss of the taste sensation would have to do with having a cold or the flu. Most people relate to this as everything taste the same and nothing has nay flavor. It could also be due to an injury, such as burning.
