This could be caused by a lack of blood circulation. Do you sleep on one side, possibly cutting off circulation to one arm? Try some type of aerobic excercise that promotes circulation. Even a brisk walk may help. If your symptoms do not go away within a week, I suggest you consult your doctor.

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when nerves in the arm and elbow get pinched usually as a result of repetitive type activities. People who work with computers are at risk.

Most likely there could be some sought of compression of the nerve supplying the thumb[neuropraxia]. The back of the thumb may be numb if your median nerve gets compressed in the wrist;a condition referred to as carpal tunnel syndrome. Rarely numbness may also be due to some affection of the vascular supply to the thumb.

The cause of the numbness in your thumb could be due to a compressed nerve. Any recent injury to the hand or wrist could cause this. Sometimes if you just sleep on it wrong it may be numb as well.
