There can be several reasons why a dog may get hives. The first thing that comes to mind is a possible vaccine reaction if the dog just had vaccines with in a few hours. Otherwise my guess would be an allergic reaction to and insect bite of some sort, such as spider or ants.

Hives on any canine can be caused from plants he may have rolled in or laid on, or from something he ate. It's a systemic reaction (like an allergy) to something in his environment. Usually they go away once the offending agent is removed, but seek veterinary care IMMEDIATELY if he shows any difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Hives are an allergic reaction to something your boxer has contacted or ingested. Your first plan should be to call your vet. At the same time, try to think if there is anything different your boxer has eaten or come into contact with recently which might have caused the hives.

My boxers all get hives with specific shampoos that I no longer use on them. Just this week one got hives from hypo-Allerginic shampoo.

Hives on Boxers is almost always caused by adn insect attack. If a dog is stung by anything be it ants, beetles, hornets or bees they can become covered by hives. Check for ant holes or hornet nests and also check the dog for ticks or fleas. One small bite is all it takes.
