The only vegetable that grows without light in a basement is mushrooms. With lights and thermal controls, any plant can be grown in a basement. To utilize the floor space, climbing vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, zucchini and beans or peas can be grown in great density. For a cooler basement, plant potato barrels with lights in the ceiling.

You will need an ultraviolet light source and a very good drainage system. Watch out for mold due to dampness.

I don't think that growing vegetables in a basement would be a good idea. I think that a basement would be too dark and damp unless you had the proper lighting and warmth to do so. I believe that vegetables thrive better in a warmer area like a garden.

If you decide to grow in this atmosphere several requirements must be met. Special U V lights are required in replacement of sunlight. Sometimes special soil is required.
