Chronic pancreatitis in cats is most often treated with Fentanyl patches for pain and fluid therapy- administered by IV. If medication has caused the pancreatitis then this is normally stopped then the vet will work to correct dehydration using supplemental fluids, provide pain relief, control the vomiting by medication or withholding food and water for 48 hrs, provide nutritional support and prevent complications although in rare cases surgery may be required if an abscess forms.

Since the pancreas is affected, quite obviously, diet is a major concern. The best way to decrease the pancreas' activity is by withholding food, water and or medications. This of course may cause dehydration which can be avoided by the introduction of fluids intravenously. Foods low in fat with highly digestible nutrients should be reintroduced in small quantities.
