Depending on the strain, there may not be any noticeable symptoms at all. Sometimes though, HPV can cause genital warts or warts on other parts of the body. Some strains cause cancer, which may not present any preliminary symptoms until the cancerous growth is discovered.

Genital warts are the most common symptom in males. Females often carry the virus with no overt symptoms. HPV may be the leading cause of cervical cancer. A vaccine is available for females of child bearing age.

Most HPV infections do not present any symptoms. When HPV does present symptoms, however, they can be very serious. HPV can cause abnormal PAP smears, certain types of cervical cancer, and genital warts. HPV is transmitted by any skin to skin contact, so you may have been exposed if you have had any genital to genital contact, even protected sex.
