I am trying to decide my position on this as my cat is getting sicker.

Assuming you've seen a vet and the outcome is not hopeful, euthanasia is a humane option when the cat is in pain or there is no quality of life.

The only thing that matters (if you love your cat) is to avoid its sufferance. Bear in mind that the cat lives day by day: it want not live just to see what happens next, like humans do. So if it is suffering the euthanasia is OK.
