The first death is the physical death. The soul is separated from the body and awaits the coming of Christ in a netherworld or resting state. Some denominations think it's limbo. Upon Christ's return, souls are judged and those who fail are terminated - a second, total death.

Jesus incarnation is the first birth and his resurrection is the second birth identify in the bible. in that same process, we have also born by divine spirit through Jesus.
